Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. According to a National Geographic article, Dia de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a lively Mexican holiday that is celebrated on November 1. The day is most strongly associated with Mexico & is also celebrated throughout Latin America.

It was believed that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness so Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, & activities the dead enjoyed in life. On Dia de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones.

Dia de los Muertos is celebrated all over Mexico but here are a few places that stand out:

  • Mexico City
  • Pátzcuaro, Michoacán
  • Oaxaca, Oaxaca
